Jill & Nathan Engagement Portraits :: Stanford University

Stanford University is one of those iconic places in the Bay Area that looms large in the imagination of a lot of people around the world.  It's a world class university that has been the incubator for many of the greatest technological and medical innovations of our time.  If you ever get a chance to visit, you'll notice there's something about the atmosphere that is both idyllic and idealistic.  Since 1891, it has attracted some of the world's brightest minds.  Stop and talk to anyone there, and you'll find they are not just friendly, but curious, helpful, and crazy smart.  It is the closest thing the west coast will ever have to a real life Hogwarts.

So it's no wonder that Stanford is one of the most popular photo shoot locations in the Bay Area.  And it’s no wonder Nathan and Jill chose it for their engagement portrait.  They went to school there, and that’s where they fell in love.  The challenge was to shoot this assignment in a unique way that steers clear of the typical clichéd Stanford engagement shoot.  But also not get too ”creative” where you can’t even tell they were at Stanford.  All while keeping in mind that Nathan is also a photographer with a keen eye for technical details.

Their wedding is September 10, 2011, and if it's going to be anything like the engagement party, I have a feeling they are going to have a VERY good time.

More to come.

One final technical note about this last shot among the Rodin statues.  I used a composite technique where I move in the lights close to the subjects to control spill, and add drama.  Then I move everyone out of the frame and take an empty picture.  With Photoshop, you can clone in the parts of one photo to another, and voila, killer photo!

These are awesome Kiet. Nice job capturing Stanford without making it all about Stanford.
